From Jon Courson's Devotional
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge was asked why he spoke so little. “I never have regretted anything I didn’t say,” he answered. How true. We often regret what we do say, but rarely what we don’t say. That is why James said it is better to be a listener than a talker (verse 1:19).
It would do us well first to think about what we’re about to say . . .
T is it truthful?
H is it helpful?
I is it inspiring?
N is it needful?
K is it kind?
If what you’re speaking is all of those things, go ahead and speak. Otherwise, keep quiet.
This article is appropriate given everything that is occuring in Ferguson, Mo.
My father was an African Methodist Minister and in 1960 he was assigned to pastor St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was six years old when we moved to Chattanooga. We lived in Chattanooga from November 1960 to November of 1965. These were very volatile years. Historic years in terms of change and perhaps the most exciting time in 20th century you were not only an African-American, but an American. In November 1965, My father was assigned as Pastor of Asbury Chapel AME Church in Louisville, Kentucky. I was able to see the world of segregation in Chattanooga and to see a totally different picture of open housing, white flight from neighborhoods, and open enrollment schooling in Louisville, Kentucky. Two contrasting situations. It was literally a tale of two cities.
Local Police force kicked off the beat in Ferguson. This is a great response. At least they were receptive to change. We can only wait and see what happens next.
The apathy and disregard for human life is more than your servants can bear. Dear Lord put a ring of protection around the citizens of Ferguson. Give them hope in the face of an ever present danger. And Lord we ask that the Appointed Leaders in Ferguson and of our Country as a whole step up and step forward and DO THE RIGHT THING FOR ALL THE PEOPLE OF FERGUSON and the people of America. We pray AND ASK IT ALL in JESUS NAME Amen.
WE CAN ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS US! Philippians 4:13
I think about the times, the hours of the day, when life was pure, life was good.
I felt invincible, I felt unique -all wraped up in a product called me. Yes, wrapped in a product called me.
I was in the zone, the product of confusion, little did I know I was living an illusion. Too young to see, too young to care, the gist of the matter I had burden's to bear.
A funny thing happend as the years went by, setbacks, sickness, job loss, family issues, and similar things all confronted me, yet taught me lessons. It's still not about me!!
Now I'm seasoned, some call it old, some call it mature and that is the course of things, life is not easy, yet I still live the dream. The dream is about Jesus and that's no lie, He's with me now as I reflect.
You know it's cool that I had to learn that life's not easy and you need a friend. I got a friend, I got a friend. Oh what a friend we have in Jesus!!!
Just open the door and let him in! Open the door and let Him in!
