Green Bay Should Just Release Farve

July 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Green Bay Packers management Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy are handling the Brent Farve situation. For those who don’t know, Farve wants to return to the Packer to play one more season. Apparently the Packer want to move on, but are not willing to release Farve from his contract. They had in effect pigeoned holed Farve by saying that he could return, but as a backup to Aaron Rogers.

This is a ploy to hopefully induce Farve to not return. The right thing to do is to release Farve and allow him to sign with any team that wants him. Maybe trade him, but it’s my quess no one wants him. But the Packer do not want Farve to come back to haunt them while playing for another team, particularly a rival team in the same division

It is agreed that Farve should not jerk his team around. But the Packers should just release him and be done with it. It is totally ridiculous to hold him to his contract , when they have no intention of giving him the starting quarterback job. The truth be told is the Packers are in great shape at quarterback, with Rogers and new backup former Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm. The decision to not release Farve from his contract is merely to encourage him from not coming back.

So both the Packers and the Farve or at a crossroad. Or should we say stalemate. I guess it is a fair assessment to see who blinks first. Farve is a little indecisive in retiring, then un retiring. He has played this act for the last two years and it is indeed getting a little old. Farve is not being truthful and the Packers should merely wash their hands of the deal and release him. He does not have enough in the tank to beat them and chance are some other team may not want him either.

Green Bay should just release him and move on to the next phase.

The Pack are in great shape at QB? With Favre they are. Rodgers has never started a game and Brohm is a rookie. When Rodgers got playing time in each of the last two seasons, he ended up with season ending injuries. The Packers are one of a handful of teams with enough talent to win a title. There is no way they reach that goal without Favre.

If they want to keep his rights and have no intention of playing him, then they ought to trade him (since they can get some value in return). OTOH, I think they’ll let Rodgers start and see how he does, and if their playoff hopes are on the line they’ll bring in Brett. Favre’s ego will be bruised but I think that’s the best solution to the problem. And if Rodgers plays well then too bad, Brett.

Really, Favre went about this in the worst way possible. He should have just come back in March when I heard he previously approached the team and they wanted him back. To wait until weeks before camp and expect to be handed the starting job just shows that Brett lives in a parallel universe in which he is at the center.
