Obama Clinches Nomination-An Historic moment in American History

June 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Tonight, history was made in America. Not just for African Americans. This night says a lot about our country and the fact that we are Americans. Barack Obama became the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States. We all debated it. There were many on the pro and con side. We really did not know if he could pull it off. Many African –Americans were non believers that the Democratic Party would select an African American as their candidate for the highest office in the land.

After all this was new uncharted ground. Never before has an African American won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. It happened in ways that no one; that includes many Americans could not possible dream. Barack Obama’s background; the son of a white mother and an African father; is a story in itself. Barack Obama was raised by his grandmother, because his father left him when he was two years old. Only in America could someone like Obama over come such odds and find himself on the brink of winning the Presidency of the United States.

This night is a night of nights, ranking up there with the first men landing on the moon. The possibility of this could be eclipsed in November, should Barack Obama win the Presidency. These are trying times for America, but it is also a time for America to be proud. It is a country where even a person from a modest upbringing like Barack Obama, could find himself with a 50/50 chance of winning the Presidency of the United States. It is a classic American dream.

One hundred-forty-five years ago the American Slaves won their freedom. In the midst of a Civil War that was waged essentially to free African Americans from Slavery. It took years of struggle, through Jim Crow laws, legal lynching, legal sharecropping, civil rights battles and the sacrifice of countless Americans both back and white who all made this night possible. It is an American saga and we can all join in the celebration of making it happen. We can all say that the sacrifices of countless Americans to uplift a race and fight against discrimination, made it possible for Barack Obama to win the Democratic Nomination for the Presidency of the United States.

That’s what makes this country great and even though it is a proud moment for many African Americans. It is a proud moment for America, where truly anyone from any background can aspire, seek and pehaps win the Presidency of the United States of America. That is what makes America great.

At 9:02 PM., June 3. An African American secured the Presidential nomination of a major party. Only 42 years ago the country enacted the voting rights act. African Americans were disenfranchised and could not vote in many parts of the country. Because they fought discrimination Barack Obama hd the opportunity to run an win the Nomination for a Major political party for the highest office in the lane. Obama also has given new hope for millions of Americans.
